Torrefied pellets for thermal power co-firing
Every coal plant in India must co-fire at least 5% biomass, and NCR plants 7%. Torrefied pellets let you reach and exceed that blend with fewer handling and milling problems.
Torrefied and non-torrefied pellets compared
| Property | Non-torrefied pellets | Torrefied pellets |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture uptake in storage | High; pellets swell and break | Low; largely water-resistant |
| Milling in existing coal mills | Poor at higher blends | Grinds much like coal |
| Energy per tonne | Lower | Higher |
| Practical co-firing level | Typically 5–10% | Demonstrated at 20% (NTPC Tanda) |
| Price | Lower | Higher, offset by handling and blend gains |
Indian utilities buying torrefied pellets typically specify gross calorific values of about 3,400–5,000 kcal/kg (Argus, on TSPL's procurement).
What we supply
Shaiva TP-Power pellets for pulverised-coal boilers, sold in India as torrefied bio coal, with a lab report for every lot and supply on trial, quarterly or annual terms.
Questions from power plants
What is the biomass co-firing mandate in India?
Under the Ministry of Power's comprehensive policy, in force from FY 2025-26, every coal-based thermal power plant must co-fire at least 5% biomass pellets or torrefied MSW charcoal. Plants in the NCR and adjoining areas must co-fire 7%, including 2% torrefied MSW charcoal.
Torrefied or non-torrefied pellets: which is better for co-firing?
Non-torrefied pellets are cheaper but absorb moisture and grind poorly at higher blends. Torrefied pellets grind in coal mills, store better and carry more energy per tonne, which makes higher co-firing ratios practical. NTPC has demonstrated 20% torrefied co-firing at Tanda.
Do you supply against power-plant tenders?
We work with plants and aggregators on trial lots and tender supply. Send the tender reference and we will confirm what we can offer.
