Questions buyers ask

What is biochar?

Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich solid made by heating biomass without oxygen, usually above 400 °C. It is used as renewable carbon in steelmaking, as a soil amendment, and to store carbon for carbon-removal projects.

What is torrefied biomass?

Torrefied biomass, also called black pellets or bio-coal, is biomass heated to about 250–300 °C without oxygen. It becomes dense, water-resistant and easy to grind, and is burned as a coal substitute.

What is the difference between biochar and torrefied biomass?

Torrefied biomass is made at a lower temperature and keeps most of its energy, so it is a fuel. Biochar is made at a higher temperature, holds more stable carbon and is used as a reductant, a soil material or a carbon store.

Can biochar replace coal in a DRI kiln or blast furnace?

Partly. Indian steelmakers have trialled biochar in DRI kilns and blast-furnace injection; Tata Steel's DRI trial reached 30% coal replacement over seven days. Each plant sets its blend through its own trial.

How does biochar help a steel plant meet its CCTS target?

Biochar is biogenic carbon, so using it in place of fossil coal lowers fossil CO₂ per tonne of steel. How it is counted follows the CCTS verification rules; we supply lot-wise data for your verifier.

What is the co-firing mandate for Indian power plants?

From FY 2025-26, every coal-based thermal plant must co-fire at least 5% biomass pellets or torrefied MSW charcoal, and NCR plants 7%.

Which HS code is used to export biochar from India?

Biochar is usually shipped under HS 4402 (wood charcoal) or HS 3802 if activated; torrefied pellets usually under HS 4401. The code is confirmed per product with a customs broker.

Does the EU Deforestation Regulation apply to biochar?

Wood charcoal (HS 4402) is covered by the EUDR from 30 December 2026, so wood-based biochar shipped to the EU needs due-diligence and geolocation data. Whether agri-residue biochar is covered depends on its classification.

What documents come with each lot?

A lab report against the agreed grade, the producer and feedstock origin, and dispatch papers. Export lots add customs and compliance documents for the destination.

What is the minimum order?

We supply samples and plant-trial lots as well as regular contracted volumes. Tell us your requirement and we will confirm the minimum for that grade and destination.

Can I sell my biochar through Shaiva Energy?

Yes. Producers with an operating biochar or torrefaction unit can apply as a supply partner.

Who is Shaiva Energy's technology partner?

Shaiva Green Carbons Pvt. Ltd., developer of patented continuous rotary torrefaction and pyrolysis reactors.
