Carbon-ready biochar for removal projects
Carbon-removal developers need biochar whose carbon content, stability and origin can be audited. We supply CDR-Char with the records a registry asks for. We supply the material; credit issuance stays with the project developer.
Why it matters now
- Biochar removal sales reached 2.99 Mt in the first half of 2026, up from 1.59 Mt a year earlier.
- The EU's biochar carbon-removal certification method under the CRCF has applied since 7 May 2026.
- India lists biochar in the offset sectors of its Carbon Credit Trading Scheme.
What comes with every lot
- Organic carbon and molar H/C ratio
- Heavy metals and PAHs, for soil application
- Feedstock type and source region
- Production date and producer
- Dispatch and chain-of-custody records
What registries look for in the biochar
Registries and standards such as Puro.earth, Isometric and the European Biochar Certificate each set their own rules, but they ask similar questions of the material:
| Question | What it means for supply |
|---|---|
| Is the feedstock eligible? | Residues and waste biomass, not wood from cleared forest; documented source |
| Is the carbon stable? | A molar H/C ratio below the standard's limit, commonly 0.7 |
| Is it safe for its end use? | Heavy metals and PAHs within limits for soil or materials use |
| Can every tonne be traced? | Production batch, lab report and dispatch records that tie together |
Shaiva Energy supplies the material and the records. Registration, monitoring of the end use and credit issuance stay with the project developer.
