Biochar supply for steel, agriculture and carbon removal
Biochar is a stable, high-carbon material made by heating biomass without oxygen. Shaiva Energy supplies it in three grades, sourced from Indian agricultural residues and invasive shrubs, tested lot by lot, and delivered across India or exported in bulk bags and containers.
Biochar grades
| Grade | For | Specification focus | Form | Packing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shaiva MetChar | DRI kilns, blast-furnace injection, sintering, ferro-alloys | High fixed carbon, low ash, low phosphorus and sulphur | Sized lumps or fines to your specification | Bulk or jumbo bags |
| Shaiva AgriChar | Soil amendment, compost and fertiliser blending | pH, water holding, low contaminants | Granules or powder | 25 kg bags or jumbo bags |
| Shaiva CDR-Char | Carbon-removal projects, concrete and materials | Organic carbon, H/C ratio, documented origin | To specification | Jumbo bags or containers |
What we test on every lot

Reference results: from fuel to carbon
The same wood chips, processed on our technology partner's continuous rotary reactor at rising temperatures, show where torrefied fuel ends and biochar begins.

At 400–500 °C the material has 70–75% fixed carbon, 5–7% ash and no more than 0.14% sulphur: the profile steel and ferro-alloy buyers look for in a reductant. Its H/C ratio of 0.36–0.51 is well inside the 0.7 limit that carbon-removal standards use for stable carbon. Phosphorus was not part of this test; we test it on MetChar lots.
Reference values for benchmark samples, not a guarantee for every lot. Tested by a national power-sector laboratory, November 2025, to IS 1350 Part 1 and ASTM D5865, D4239 and D5373. Air-dried basis. H/C calculated from total carbon and hydrogen.

Biochar questions
What is the price of biochar per tonne in India?
Price depends on grade, particle size, volume and delivery point. We quote per tonne and, for steel buyers, per tonne of fixed carbon, within one business day of your enquiry.
Do you export biochar?
Yes. We quote FOB or CIF from Indian ports and provide the lab report, certificate of origin and phytosanitary certificate where the destination requires it.
Can you match a steel plant's specification?
Yes. Send your current coal or charcoal specification; we confirm the closest MetChar grade and arrange a trial lot.
What comes with each lot?
A lab report against the agreed grade, the producer and feedstock origin, and dispatch papers. Export lots also carry the customs and compliance documents for the destination.
Which feedstocks is your biochar made from?
Agricultural residues such as rice straw and corn cobs, invasive shrubs such as Prosopis juliflora, and wood residues. The feedstock is recorded for every lot.
